Asia-Oceania Biblical Congress held in Thailand,

extending biblical ministry with focus on Church of China

The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) and the Catholic Biblical Federation (CBF) jointly organized the Fifth Asia-Oceania Biblical Cognress and the Third Bishops’ Institute for the Biblical Apostolate with the theme “With the Word of Life on the Roads of Asia-Oceania” from 4 to 8 November, 2010 in Pattaya, Thailand.

Some 100 servants of the Word, including 9 bishops, from over 20 countries gathered to collectively reflect on the Word of God Final Message and the 55 Propositions. Pope Benedict XVI sent a message to the Congress, praying that “the word of God may spread rapidly and be glorified” (2 Thess. 3:1) and the treasure of revelation, entrusted to the Church, may more and more fill the hearts of men (Dei Verbum 26).

Chairman of the FABC-Office of Evangelization, Archbishop T. Menamparampil gave an inaugural talk on “Sharing the Word of Life in Asia and Oceania: In Dialogue with Cultures”. He highlighted that the evangelizing mission of the Church is to answer the hunger and famine for hearing the word of the Lord (Amos 8:11). In his keynote address, Bishop P. V. S. David, Asia-Oceania Representative of the Executive Committee of the Catholic Biblical Federation, based on the Story of Emmaus to chain up the four stages of the biblical journey: “Voice”, “Face”, “House” and “Roads” of the Word and presented the approaches for new evangelization for the Church of Asia-Oceania.

Extending support to the biblical pastoral ministry in China is a service priority for the CBF. At the Congress, two priests from the Diocese of Zhaoxian, Hebei and the Diocese of Lanzhou, Gansu presented sharings on “Communication Theology and Biblical Pastoral Ministry” and “Biblical Pastoral Ministry in China: Opportunities and Challenges”.

Cecilia Chui, North East Asia Subregional Coordinator of CBF, presented a review and outlook on “China Priority and Regionalization of the Catholic Biblical Federation”. Other topics addressed for exchange at the Congress included social issues, liturgy, biblical formation, eco-spirituality, spiritual reading of the Bible, youth and building small Christian communities.
